Delta-8 THC is a cannabinoid found in cannabis that also can be synthesized from CBD or Delta-9 THC. When people refer to THC they are typically speaking of Delta-9 THC found in marijuana. Delta-9 THC is still currently illegal in TN and many other states, thought the legalization tide is quickly rising. Delta-9 THC (D9 for short) is the substance in marijuana that gives you the euphoric, sedative high and is currently listed as a Schedule 1 Drug by the DEA. Delta-8 THC is a very similar chemical compound to D9 and offers users a very similar euphoric experience.
D8 can be created from marijuana or from hemp. The majority of the D8 on the market is hemp derived, making it federally legal and allows consumers to legally purchase in Tennessee. The chemical makeup of D8 THC is nearly identical to D9, the only difference being the location of the double bond. Both THC’s are made up of a carbon chain, Delta 9 has the double bond on the 9th carbon, and unsurprisingly Delta-8 has the double bond on the 8th.
Will Delta-8 THC Get You High?
Yes, much like it’s closely related cousin, D8 THC will give users a very similar euphoric feeling. This allows people living in non-legal states to experience a THC like ‘high’ without needing to travel or break any laws. The potency of this legal cannabinoid is slightly lower than ‘regular’ THC, making it possible to have a less intense experience for those who may be sensitive to D9. This lower potency makes for a milder, smoother high that can be enjoyable even for people who don’t enjoy Delta-9 THC.
Is D8 THC Available in Flower?
D8 is typically synthesized from CBD distillate, so any flower or buds that you find has had D8 added to it in some way. This infused or sprayed flower starts out as CBD (hemp) flower with D8 distillate added to it. Most of the D8 flower on the market has been thinned out using a solvent in order to spray the flower. There are a few companies (Nashville’s own Canvast Supply Co being one of them) using proprietary methods to create solventless D8 flower. Solventless Delta-8 flower tastes better and is a cleaner smoke than flower sprayed with solvent thinned distillate.
Infusing CBD flower with D8 creates a very nice 1:1 CBD:THC strain that is relaxing and easily tolerated even by those of us with a low tolerance! For users with a higher tolerance there’s vape cartridges and edibles that can provide a stronger, more intense experience depending on the dosage.
